Auto-Verify References

Take the work out of checking references. Find out how to use questionnaires to automatically request input from your candidates’ references.

With automatic verification of references, you can request feedback from a candidate’s references, without lifting a finger!

Candidate Questionnaires are available to customers on all paid plans. Admin permission is required to create and edit questionnaires

How to auto-verify a candidate’s references

You can choose to have a candidate’s references auto-verified when you use the Reference Check response type on a questionnaire.

  1. Click the gear icon ⚙️ in the left sidebar.
  2. Hover over Recruiting Preferences and click Questionnaires.
  3. Click the edit icon (pad and pen) next to the correct questionnaire.
  4. Click + Add Question.
  5. Enter your question and a brief description, if you like.
  6. Choose the Reference Check response type.
  7. Click the checkbox to require reference info, if you like.
  8. Enter the number of references to collect.
  9. Click the checkbox to enable Auto-verify.
  10. Click the checkbox to enable a Custom Reference Questionnaire if you’d like to customize the questions on your request.

With auto-verify enabled, an email will automatically be sent to the references the candidate submitted. We'll explain the reason for the email and ask them to answer common reference-check questions, using a form linked in the email.

Reference check questions

The default reference check questions will vary, depending on whether a candidate marked the reference as professional or personal.

You can customize the questions, and which ones are required, by enabling the Custom Reference Questionnaire option on the reference check question in the questionnaire. If you customize the questions, you can only include one set of questions, not a separate version for personal and professional references.

Questions for professional references

By default, references marked as “professional” will receive the following set of questions (bold items are required):

  • Full Name
  • How long have you known {name}?
  • How long did you work with {name}?
  • Please describe {name}'s day-to-day responsibilities when you work with them previously.
  • What do you think {name} needs to continue to grow in their career?
  • If you were hiring people, would you hire the {name} and, if so, for what type of position?
  • Is there anything else you'd like to share about {name}?

Questions for personal references

By default, references marked as “personal” will receive the following set of questions (bold items are required):

  • Full Name
  • How long have you known {name}?
  • What is your relationship with {name}?
  • What would you say are {name}'s weaknesses?
  • What would you say are {name}'s strengths?
  • If you were hiring people, would you hire the {name} and, if so, why?
  • Is there anything else you'd like to share about {name}?

How to view reference check responses

When a reference submits a response, we'll notify you and will add their answers to the References tab of the candidate's profile.

  1. Open the candidate’s profile.
  2. Click the More dropdown near the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Click References to open the References tab.
